Raising California Together (SEIU)

Childcare & Labor Advocacy

Coalition Communications & Campaign Strategy

The Challenge

A 70+ member statewide coalition advancing childcare reform needed consistent, coordinated messaging across a large and diverse partner network. Without shared language and a unified communications infrastructure, the coalition risked sending conflicting signals to legislators, media, and the public at critical moments in the campaign.

THE Approach

Common Thread coordinated communications and messaging workflows across the full coalition, designed and launched integrated advocacy campaigns, produced messaging toolkits and talking points, and created legislative updates to ensure consistency across all partner organizations. The goal: give every coalition member the tools to speak with one voice while still owning their own story.

Outcomes

  • Increased public awareness and partner engagement by 30%
  • Messaging toolkits adopted by all 70+ coalition partners
  • Consistent legislative communications across a complex, multi-stakeholder campaign
  • Strengthened coalition cohesion through shared narrative infrastructure

Community Engagement & Donor Communications

The Challenge

Serving as Director of Community Engagement, Common Thread led the organization's engagement strategy, donor cultivation initiatives, and partnership-driven outreach campaigns, integrating communications across channels, building a more consistent brand voice, and elevating visibility across the Kansas City region.

Outcomes

  • Increased civic leadership participation by 28%
  • Grew monthly donor revenue by 20% through segmentation and donor experience improvements
  • Elevated brand visibility through integrated, cross-platform communications
  • Strengthened coalition and partnership relationships across the Kansas City region

Campaign Communications — Housing, Minimum Wage & Healthcare

The Challenge

Across multiple statewide campaigns, including housing access, minimum wage increases, and Medicare expansion and ACA protection, advocacy organizations needed communications strategies that could cut through political noise, mobilize grassroots supporters, and build the public will necessary to move legislation.

THE Approach

Common Thread developed communications frameworks and project plans for ballot measures and public education initiatives, producing digital, social, and print content tailored to each campaign's audiences and goals. Work included message development, voter outreach strategy, earned media support, and narrative storytelling designed to connect policy to lived experience.

Outcomes

  • 20%+ growth in grassroots fundraising across campaigns
  • Strengthened supporter mobilization through targeted digital and print content
  • Consistent earned media strategy across housing, wage, and healthcare campaigns
  • Messaging frameworks that translated complex policy into compelling public narratives

Fundraising Communications & Strategic Planning

The Challenge

With a $5.7M state grant on the line, Nate's Place needed to raise $571,000 in community donations while simultaneously building the communications infrastructure for long-term sustainability.

THE Approach
